Rajinikanth’s latest release Coolie has completed its first week in theatres, but after a record-breaking start, the film’s box office run seems to be slowing down.
From Record Opening to Sharp Decline
The Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed gangster drama opened with a massive ₹65 crore on day one, making it the second-best opening for a Tamil film—just behind Vijay’s Leo (₹66 crore) and ahead of Rajinikanth’s own 2.0 (₹60 crore).
However, despite such a strong start, the film failed to maintain momentum. On its first Sunday, Coolie brought in only ₹35.25 crore, showing no significant growth from earlier days. By the second week, collections had dropped further, with the film earning just ₹6.25 crore on day eight—its lowest single-day figure so far.
As per trade tracker Sacnilk, the total domestic box office collection now stands at ₹229.75 crore. While impressive on paper, the figures are lower than expected given the star power attached to the project.
Star-Studded Cast, Mixed Audience Response
Coolie features a powerhouse cast with Rajinikanth in the lead, alongside Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj. The film also boasts a cameo appearance by Aamir Khan. Music is composed by Anirudh Ravinchander, whose tracks, including the popular Monica song, have gained traction.
Interestingly, Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir has emerged as the breakout star, with critics and audiences praising his performance and screen presence—even stealing the spotlight in some sequences from Rajinikanth himself.
What’s Next for Coolie?
Despite the steep decline, Coolie has already crossed the ₹230 crore mark domestically in just over a week. The question now is whether it can sustain in the coming days, especially with new releases around the corner.
For Rajinikanth, who continues to command one of the largest fan bases in Indian cinema, the film’s performance serves as a reminder that even superstar-led projects need strong storytelling and word-of-mouth to thrive beyond the initial hype.
